Switchgear is the combinations of electrical disconnect
switches or circuit breakers which are used to control and segregate Electrical
equipment. It is widely used in power station, substation, airport, railways,
malls, Industries & other non industrial areas to de-energize the
equipments as well as to clear the faults. Switchgears are directly connected
with the reliability of electric power supply.
Switchgear Equipment
Switchgear equipment are used in switching and interrupting
the Electric current in normal condition as well as during electric surges. It includes
Load Break Switches, fuses, relays, circuit breakers and so on.
Switch
A switch is electrical equipment which is used to open or
close the circuit in an appropriate way. It can be used under full-load or
no-load state but it cannot disrupt the fault currents. When the contacts of a
switch are opened, an arc is produced in the air between the contacts. This is especially
true for high voltage circuits and large capacity of current.
Fuses
A Fuse is a small piece of wire which melts when large
amount of current flows through it for an adequate time. It is added in series
with the circuit to be protected. When an electric short circuit or overload
happens, the current through the fuse element is increased beyond its capacity.
This raises the temperature and the fuse element melts, disconnecting the
circuit protected by it.
Circuit Breakers
Circuit Breakers are the Switchgear which can open and close
the Electric circuit in both normal and unusual conditions (Electric crisis).
Circuit Breaker is highly preferable to break the fuse, when it is adequate.
Relays
A relay is a device which identifies the fault and delivers
information to the circuit breaker for circuit disruption. Relay contacts are closed when a fault occurs
and the coil of the circuit breaker is keyed up to open the contacts of the
circuit breaker.
